Toefl is abriation of test of English as a foreign language. Toefl is also a English language test, where designed for measure control their English language, who are their mother were not used English language. This test was developed and organized by ETS ( educational testing service ). ETS is an institution nirlaba, based on USA, and was first held in 1964. Toefl value usually one of the requirement to entered in a number of universities. The universities are in USA, Canada, and 80 other countries in the world. Whole questions was made in the form of multiple choice. Except for the computer based toefl, there are essay questions, that the test writing ability for the participants in English language. And there are other variations, such as match, and highlight certain words in connection with the main idea from the reading, etc. Whole test takes place in ± 150 minutes, for the pencil based toefl. And for the computer based toefl, is about ± 240 minutes. A relatively long time for computer based toefl, it has included tutorials of procedures. Toefl is consists of two types, there are :
1. Paper and pencil based toefl
2. Computer basic toefl
The Paper and pencil based toefl is the test, where the questions although the answers done by using paper and pencil. While the Computer basic toefl , this model is a relatively new test. Because it was first introduced in 1998.
This test using computer for present the questions and for the participants test, answer the test via computer too. Besides the two above, for purposes of selection of an institution, ETS also held TOEFL ITP ( institutional testing programme ). Amount of questions and difficulties from the ITP, no different from the two types above. Because the questions on ITP is used in TOEFL test, which has been used previously. The differences that should be known by the participants was the score obtained from TOEFL ITP, and limited in their use. For example, the universities in USA, will only accept scores obtained from the paper and pencil based toefl, or computer basic toefl. The other difference is the test cost. For the paper and pencil and computer, now is about US$ 110. But for the ITP, cheaper until US$ 25.
For the other difference, is from the enforcement. For the paper, pencil and computer, was held only in particular test center. And the schedule test, which has been determined in previous days. For the ITP, was more flexible. And in Indonesia, implemented by IIEF. IIEF is abriation of the Indonesian international education foundation. IIEF in coordination with the central language in public universities. Besides ITP, there are also TOEFL prediction or equivalent test which is usually used to estimate the toefl score a person. Before he followed the other toefl. The other toefl are paper and pencil, computer based, and ITP.
The toefl prediction type, generally held by the institution, or central language, or english courses, which organizes toefl training. There are the differences in rating or scoring system. The differences to avoid misunderstandings in the interpretation of test scores, which reported by participants. The differences are :
1. For the paper and pencil, ITP and prediction = 310 ( lowest ) – 677 ( highest )
2. For the computer based toefl = 0 – 300

For the difficulty level, amount of questions this test type, is same. So that can be said, that they are who obtaining a score of 677 in paper and pencil, is expected to obtain a score of 300 in computer. And opposite is also for the lowest score. As we know, that three level of mastery of foreign languages. There are : 1. Basic level ( elementary )
2. Intermediate level
3. Advanced
For the toefl score, the linguists usually classify this group into the following 4 levels :
1. Elementary = 310 – 420
2. Low intermediate = 420 – 480
3. High intermediate = 480 – 520
4. Advanced = 525 – 677
